Reuters reports that The Descendants has only opened in 29 locations so far but it’s already hit the number 10 spot at the box office, pulling in a cool 1.3 million!
Let’s hope this trend will only continue as it continues to open wider across America in the run up to Thanksgiving, use this link from Fox Searchlight to see the release date for your states. Europe won’t have the movie until January and onwards.
Hopefully this will lead to more exposure and promotion for Matthew as he gears up to take Fat Kid Rules The World to film festivals!
Many reviewers have put The Descendants in the running for many awards, so it’ll be fun to see how many it gets! Fingers crossed, it starts with nominations for Best Feature and Best Ensemble at the Gotham Awards on the 28th November!
Matthew’s titular Fat Kid, Jacob Wsyocki is also nominated for Best Breakthrough Actor and his role in Terri is so deserving of an award.
We have added new premiere photos to the gallery from New York and Los Angeles. Wonderful photos of Matthew and Heather on the red carpet as always!
Now that the movie has opened, the reviews are also rolling in! We have selected a few that specifically mention Matthew.
The Cult Jar – “teen movie staple Matthew Lillard comes out of nowhere to give a solid performance”.
Men’s Health are our favourite outlet so far, would love to see this quote in their magazine, “Lillard has emerged from a half-decade of big screen exile with a star-(re)making turn in Alexander Payne’s indelible The Descendants, opening in New York and L.A. today. Lillard’s performance is this year’s best comeback..”
They have an amazing interview with Matthew, called How To Survive Career Exile where they talk in depth about his career and how he kept busy during the lean years as well as his love for Heather, aw!
Broadway World discuss Harbor (which only has 6 performances left, go see it!), The Descendants, acting onstage and his acting idol!
Black Book did a great interview too but didn’t do themselves favours by not looking up Fat Kid’s information, misspelling Jacob’s name and earlier movie, Terri. This interview with Matthew discusses his audition with Alexander Payne, how he wishes he did drugs, Scooby Doo and his thoughts on Scream 4!
Moviefone chimes in saying, “Matthew Lillard is very aware of what you think of him. Matthew Lillard may be the most self-aware actor that I’ve ever interviewed. And ‘The Descendants’ just may change what you think of Matthew Lillard.”
So what are you waiting for, go see the movie and let us know what you think!
Katie sneakily took this picture of the credits at the London Film Festival’s screening of The Descendants, documenting how nice it was to see Matthew’s name on the big screen again!
